APPLE CREATIVE DIRECTOR – Andrew McKechnie

From New Zealand to New York to being head-hunted by Apple, Andrew will share his innovation journey in Marketing and Advertising and what it takes to lead a 60-strong team in today’s dynamic and ever-changing creative environment.

While Andrew still calls New Zealand home, he spent his childhood in Kenya, the Philippines and Indonesia. Throw Singapore, Boston, New York, and San Francisco into the mix and you can see why his accent is a little peculiar. Andrew began his career in Asia and soon become one of the region’s most promising young writers. During his time at BBDO and JWT, he picked up major international awards, including the Outdoor Grand Prix at AdFest and Gold medals at Cannes, ADC, the One Show, and YoungGuns. He was also named Young Professional of the Year by the 4As and honored by the CLIO Awards as one of the Top 6 Young Writers in the world.

In 2008, Andrew joined Modernista! in Boston USA where he led integrated campaigns for Cadillac, (RED), and National Park Foundation. His interactive work at Modernista! garnered awards at SXSW, and Gold medals at Hive Awards, and W3. Eventually the lure of New York brought Andrew to Y&R in 2010, where he became Global Creative Director on LG Electronics across all divisions. In the same year, his creative work for LG went on to win Gold medals at the CLIO Awards, LIA, and AICP. In 2012 Andrew became Executive Creative Director on Land Rover North America, United States Olympic Committee, and Footaction accounts. His highly acclaimed “Roam Free” work for Land Rover was the agency’s most awarded work that year.

In 2013 Andrew joined DDB New York as Executive Creative Director to run the global Reebok account on all fitness categories. He was also the creative lead on projects for WATERisLIFE and the New York City Ballet, both of which received high praise for their provocative and moving short films. TIME Magazine named the WATERisLIFE Drinkable Book as one of the 25 Best Inventions of 2015 and Fast Company celebrated the project with the 2015 Innovation by Design Award.

After over a decade in the industry, Andrew decided to venture on a different path and joined Apple in 2014 to help build the internal creative group. He currently manages and oversees the Design Group, an exceptionally talented team of over 60 producers, designers, art directors, and writers from various disciplines and backgrounds.

Andrew is a strong advocate of building young talent and is involved in various mentor programs with Hyper Island, Miami Ad School, SVA, and AWARD School. At DDB New York he ran the innovative talent development program LaunchPad, which helps entry-level creatives break into the advertising industry. Since joining Apple, Andrew has helped build the internship program and recently implemented Apple’s inaugural Writing Internship Program. He is also a regular jury member at international awards shows, including LIA, ADC, NY Festivals, AICP, amongst others.

Andrew believes his diverse background has always played an important role in his work and hopes his unique point of view and international experience continues to influence his work in interesting and unexpected ways.
